Gunmen kill security agents, others in Kano, Yobe
GUNMEN suspected to be members of Boko Haram yesterday killed two civilians and two Air Force officers in Kano.
Also, some suspected members of the sect attacked the patrol vehicle of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in
Nasarawa Ward of Damaturu, Yobe State, killing a policeman. Two soldiers and a policeman were wounded in the attack carried out on Saturday.
An eyewitness told The Guardian yesterday that two men suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect arrived on a motorbike and held residents of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) depot area in Kano hostage for a few minutes after men of the Military Joint Task Force (JTF) on patrol had departed the zone.
Two officers of the Nigerian Air Force were also reported killed at the same time but at different spots in Kano metropolis. The officers who were said to be in an official car were attacked by two faceless gunmen on bikes opposite Sa’adatu Rimi College of Education along Zaria road in Kano.
The State police command confirmed the two attacks.
According to a resident of Damaturu in Yobe, Isa Audu, the soldiers were patrolling Nasarawa Ward, when the gunmen attacked their vehicle with an Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on Potiskum road, reducing the newly built Yobe Pilgrims Welfare Commission (YPWC) complex to rubbles.
Audu, in a telephone conversation yesterday said: “The soldiers had fired back, repelled the gunmen and chased them to one of their hideouts in the ward, while we remained in our houses as the shootout and bombings lasted for several hours to the early morning of today (yesterday).”
Speaking on the slain policeman and the multiple blasts in Damaturu, the Police Commissioner, Patrick Egbuniwe said one of the patrol vehicles of JTF was ambushed on Saturday night by suspected Boko Haram gunmen.
He noted that the soldiers were on routine patrol of the metropolis when their vehicle was attacked, an hour before the 10pm curfew.
Egbuniwe said in the attacks, two men of the military task force were wounded.
On whether arrests were made, he said: “No arrests were made, but the extent of destruction and loss of lives on the part of gunmen, were yet to be ascertained as I speak to you now.”
