GUNMEN suspected to be Boko Haram members have killed a policewoman, Sarah Mala, at her residence in Jiddari Polo ward of Maiduguri, by slitting her throat in the early hours of Monday.
The incident occurred as the police began combing the nooks and crannies of Benue State to avert the intrusion of members of Boko Haram and arrest a leader of the group, popularly called Jalingo, said to have escaped with gunshot wounds during a raid by security operatives from Abuja.
Meanwhile, Kaduna State Governor Muktar Ramallan Yero has said that all hands must be on deck to ensure that the security challenges facing the nation end, warning that democracy dividend cannot be achieved in an atmosphere of instability.
Yero advised that government and Boko Haram should engage in meaningful dialogue to end the insecurity that has affected socio-economic activities in some parts of the North and the country in general.
Yero spoke at this year’s emblem launch, which signifies the beginning of the 2013 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration.
The gunmen who killed a policewoman in Borno, according to an eyewitness, trailed her to the house where they tied her hands to the back and slit her throat.
Audu told The Guardian that the policewoman was also a member of the Church of Christ in Nigeria Gambouru ward.
He said Sarah was killed because she was alleged to be an informant to the Joint Task Force (JTF) and the police on the activities and hideouts of Boko Haram members in Maiduguri.
Confirming the incident Monday in Maiduguri, the spokesman of Borno State Police Command, Gideon Jibrin, said that there were attacks in the Jiddari Polio area in the early hours of yesterday where one of the police officers was feared killed by suspected gunmen. He added that two other residents were also injured in the attacks, before the JTF rushed to the area at dawn.
He said none of the suspected assassins was arrested by either the JTF or police.
Also, Human Rights Writers’ Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the Federal Government to quickly begin prosecution of high profile terrorism suspects in the competent courts of law, making use of the best legal minds it can muster through the office of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice so as to obtain successful convictions for these grave crimes against humanity.
HURIWA warned the Federal Government against leaving the prosecution of these terrorism suspects to the Nigeria Police prosecution teams because of what it described as serial incompetence and professional indiscipline in the security organisation that has compromised several high profile prosecutions in the recent times.
The call came 24 hours after President Goodluck Jonathan celebrated the arrest of significant number of terrorism suspects implicated in the bombings of the Nigeria Police Headquarters and the United Nations building in Abuja as well as the Catholic Church in Madala, near Abuja which killed scores of innocent Nigerians and peaceful Christian worshippers.
In a statement by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Director, Zainab Yusuf, HURIWA said it was wrong and ill-timed for President Jonathan to publicly celebrate the arrest of these high profile terrorism suspects even before they are put to trial in compliance with several provisions of the Constitution.
Besides, the rights group said it makes no meaning for the Federal Government to engage on phantom celebration of high profile arrest when most Nigerians know that the police prosecution teams had in the past messed up several high profile cases in the courts thereby allowing the suspects to escape the long arm of the law because of professional incompetence, corruption and compromise on the part of the prosecution teams.
Citing the case of the suspects in the assassination of the then Federal Attorney General, Chief Bola Ige (SAN) who were discharged by the Oyo State High Court following the incompetence of the police prosecution team, HURIWA told President Jonathan that posterity will not forgive his government should he allow the prosecution of these terrorism suspects be compromised by the police prosecution teams.
